Don't worry, I was fine! [Kor pats Steven on the back in their hug, and then breaks away, ruffling his hair.] I knew you'd be back sooner or later, that's why I didn't even bother to move your stuff out!
Ummmm... [He looks on with a strained smile and scratches nervously at his hair as some of the lights flicker.] Y-yeah, not all of the things that happened were good. There were some bad things in there. Pretty bad! [He knows he can't just hide things from Kor anymore, although he's reluctant to just unload it all on him at the same time.]
Th-things were okay just before I came back here, though.
[Kor can tell that things were more than just "pretty bad" for Steven. Honestly, even though they've been living together and he's been taking care and teaching and training Steven, there's still a lot he doesn't know about him. Steven just doesn't seem to share much about himself. ...Or maybe Kor's never really asked him? Well, whatever, now's the time to fix that and hope for the best!]
You wanna talk about it? C'mon, you can tell me over breakfast, I can cook up a pretty mean one if I really put my mind to it!
No!! [He blurts out, but then after a moment he weakly smiles.] Oh - sorry. It's just, I found a mean breakfast once. But that was a long time ago, and it doesn't have to do with this current stuff.
[Steven raises his hands in a calming gesture and takes a breath.]
Breakfast is fine! Let's have some nice together breakfast, a-and I'll talk to you about stuff, and things... Oh jeez, it's a really long story.
[An actual mean breakfast? That sounds awful, breakfast should never be mean in the literal sense, it's a sacred time of day!
But with that out of the way, Kor escorts Steven to the kitchen/dining area of the house. They can have a nice breakfast now!]
Well, this breakfast's gonna be great! We'll have eggs, and toast, and bacon and--
[...Well, they would have a nice breakfast, except Kor didn't turn the flames off when he went to check on Steven. The eggs are a charred mess, the toast is burnt, the bacon is... well actually the bacon might be alright depending on how Steven likes his, but everything is black and burnt and not looking very appetizing or edible. But Kor doesn't miss a beat. Can't let this get him down!]
[Together Breakfast was a dark, dark time in Steven's life... It's hard to relive.
Steven follows Kor with a merry trot and he sniffs at the air as they near the kitchen. Things are starting to smell a little burny. And once he witnesses the source of it all, he gives Kor a meek smile and nods at the alternate suggestion.]
Waffles would be... great right about now! No waffling on this one! [It's a shame Amethyst isn't here. She'd love to eat all that burnt food! And possibly the cookingware too!]
Great! [He works on rounding up all the burnt foods first, dumping into a pair of dishes for the two wyverns that lived in the home, who've already been lurking around the kitchen as it is. They hungrily dive into the bowls.]
[Steven gives a weak giggle at the antics of the wyverns before he turns his attention to Kor.]
Oh! Well, a bunch of things. Like, giving myself up and being put on trial in outer space, my friend dying and coming back, aaand getting into a big argument with my best friend! Things have been... pretty eventful. [He manages to be somewhat casual, but he looks weary. And the light above is dim.]
[Steven's words immediately put Kor on edge, nearly dropping the dish he was scraping food of. Even the wyverns stop eating momentarily, looking confused at the suddenly change in the atmosphere.]
Hold on, trial?! Okay, Steven, you have to explain.
Maybe you should start from the beginning. I think there's a lot going on here that I don't know. [Mostly because Kor never thought to ask. How deep of a backstory could a kid have, right???]
Right. [He nods and takes a sip of orange juice before he starts to recount.]
So, the thing about gems is that they come from this place called the Gem Homeworld. It's ruled by the Diamond Authority, and they're... not so good. They colonize worlds and drain them of resources which... make it so no life can survive. They tried doing that to Earth, but my mom didn't want to. That's why she started the Crystal Gems. To fight Homeworld and save the Earth. But she might have done something bad to make it happen... She might have shattered a diamond. Pink Diamond.
[....Geez. Hearing Steven's story about the "Diamond Authority" reminds him of how the Minerans treated his planet, Organica. Seeing it as nothing but a ball full of resources for their entertainment. But this is a whole lot worse. This is like if the Minerans saw the whole universe that way!
But Steven's mom tried to fight against them. Even though she was one of them? He always kind of got a Lithia vibe from her, for reasons he didn't quite grasp at the time, but now it makes sense.
Kor understands now where Steven's story is going, at least with this "trial"...]
And you feel responsible for that, don't you...
[There's a sense of disapproval in his voice over that. But then again, Steven should know how Kor feels about his tendency to feel responsible for his mom's actions.]
I do. [He answers. But then, he tries to clarify.] I mean, I did. At home... It's confusing.
[With his experiences of Empatheias and the help of people like Kor, Steven's started to distance himself from feeling responsible for Rose's sins. But he's not quite at that place when he's at home and can't remember Empatheias.
Steven places a hand on his head for a moment, then shakes his head as he goes on.]
A-anyway, back in the present... some Homeworld gems came to Earth and started capturing a bunch of humans. Some of the people I care about the most! A-and you wanna know why they were being captured? It's all because they took some silly thing I said to a different gem out of context, and they thought that my friends were all different human species! I was trying not to make Mom's mistakes, but... I put all my friends in danger anyway.
[He bows his head, some crumbling rose petals descending around him.]
And those Homeworld Gems were too strong for us to beat. So... I gave myself up. I told them I was Rose Quartz and to take me instead of them. And they did. They... took me all the way to Homeworld so I could go on trial in front of the Diamonds for what Mom did. ...What she probably did.

Oh! Okay. So it's just like the other time. ...Sorry if I worried you! I'm here now.

Awww, that's so nice! Well I'm glad you had faith in me. And I'm also glad I got to live up to it! It's good to be back!
[Except he becomes less shiny as he says that, and he quickly admits.]
W-well, maybe not completely good.

Why? Did something bad happen?

...How about waffles?

Right... explanations! That would be nice. Okay, so the trial! ...Actually, do you even know the backstory? I... never told you about the war, did I?
